It seems like Microsoft has listened to its users this time. Microsoft Office 2010 comes with improved user interface and online collaboration feature. Included software (Word, Excel, etc) has unique updates, so let’s go over them one by one.
Word 2010
The most notable update probably is its online integration with other users. Once you share your document on Word 2010, you can edit the document at the same time while chatting or calling. If you are familiar with Google Docs, imagine that you can use Google Docs on desktop while preserving the online editing feature. Another great feature called Document Map, not being taken advantage by many users, got an update that makes it even more valuable. If you have written a document that runs more than 10 pages, you will find the feature very helpful. Basically, you can click the title of headlines of each section on the side bar (after enabling the document map feature under View tab) and you can jump to that section without scrolling down or up to find where it was. In Word 2010, you can even manage it like an outline and move around the paragraphs just by drag & drop the section headlines on the sidebar.
Excel 2010
New features installed for Excel 2010 may not be relevant to users who typically manage small amount of data. For example, now you can use the tool called ‘slicer’ to visually apply filter on the data to focus on the information you want. Additionally, you can now put ‘graph’ within a cell and manage it like a data cell, and it will be helpful feature if you want to see the data trend separately. Overall, the new updates benefit power users and not so much for users who use the minimum features of Excel.
PowerPoint 2010
Most of the improvements for PowerPoint 2010 are ‘visually’ focused: photo editing, video editing, and animation editing. For photos, you can edit and add more attractive effects than the previous versions. If you want to play video on PowerPoint, now you can control it with built-in media player and video editor to select the section you want to play. You can also add improved slide effects and apply object animation to other objects easily. But what’s most notable is remote slide presentation controlling. Now you can publish your slides ‘online’ for other computers see on browser online, and the slides on other computer’s browser ‘slides’ when you move slides on your computer at the same time. This feature would be a life saver if you have problem with projectors (which always happens).
Outlook 2010
The most notable difference would be an added ribbon feature on Outlook series for the first time. The other features such as minimizing the conversation chart or hiding repetitive and unnecessary reply (what?). Compared to other software, Outlook 2010 probably got the least improvement over 2007.
Conclusion
If you are using Office 2007 and see the need to collaborate documents with other people, you will definitely benefit from the new updates. Personally, Word and PowerPoint became really useful and I see the great benefit to switch over. If you are the Office 2003 owner, you really need to move up to newer Office, and Office 2010 might be a good opportunity for you to move on.
