From Awkward to Authentic: Smarter AI Email Intros

In recent months, more professionals are seeing a flood of cold emails with AI-generated intros, and many recipients can tell when these emails miss the mark. These intros often pull from LinkedIn data and aim to craft personalized messages—but sometimes end up falling flat, misinterpreting information, or creating awkward, impersonal greetings. When done poorly, AI-generated introductions can backfire, giving recipients a negative view of both the sender and the technology behind it.

Reiterating my entire career history from my LinkedIn profile is ineffective. Also, their AI hallucinated that I worked at Goldman Sachs probably based on my consulting experience.

How can marketers and sales professionals prevent AI from diminishing their outreach efforts? The key lies in using generative AI thoughtfully, with a more human-centered approach. Here are five essential strategies for transforming these AI-generated introductions from impersonal scripts into genuine connections:

  1. Put Yourself in the Message:
Let the AI know more about you. Include details from your own professional background, interests, or experiences so it can build a connection between you and the recipient. Avoid simply listing the recipient’s career highlights or trying to impress them with facts they already know about themselves. A real connection starts with you being willing to share a piece of yourself.
  2. Select the Strongest Connection Point:
AI can pull in endless details from a person’s profile, but not all of it is meaningful. Instead of listing every potential point of connection, prompt the AI to choose one effective and relevant connection point. This focuses the introduction, ensuring the recipient feels a genuine, tailored approach instead of a superficial scan of their public data.
  3. Prevent Hallucinations:
When AI generates personalized messages, it can sometimes “hallucinate”—or guess—details that aren’t factual, like a job you never held or a skill you don’t have. To minimize these errors, guide the AI to stick to verified, reliable information only. This reduces the risk of it inventing details that might create confusion or mistrust.
  4. Define Boundaries:
Tell the AI what not to do. For example, advise against commenting on language or cultural nuances if you’re not confident in the accuracy or context of the information. AI often lacks the subtle understanding needed to handle these topics effectively, and a misstep here can be off-putting to recipients.
  5. Get Creative and Consider Humor:
When no strong connection point exists between your profile and theirs, ask the AI to create a lighthearted, original introduction. Humor, when appropriate and tasteful, can catch attention in a way that avoids the pitfalls of a superficial “personalized” message. A touch of cleverness can make an email introduction memorable without the risk of guessing wrong about someone's history.

By following these steps, marketers can elevate their AI-driven outreach to feel more sincere, respectful, and human-centered. In a world where recipients can tell when they’re reading an auto-generated message, adding a genuine touch to AI-generated content can make all the difference.

What’s your take on AI in email outreach? Do you think it enhances or diminishes the personal touch?
